Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain shouldn’t stop you from reaching for the stars…or that Sweater on the shelf

Shoulder pain can occur from a variety of causes. You may have just injured your shoulder, suffered a traumatic fall, or simply lifted something too heavy. Perhaps your shoulder pain has been coming on gradually over months or years; you might have a job that requires repetitive use of your arms or you play a sport which requires a lot of throwing. Whatever the reason, you are just now seeking help. Shoulders are complicated, but your recovery doesn’t have to be! Come visit us at Ridgeview Physical Therapy & Wellness where your physical therapist will fully assess your neck and shoulder.

When you hear about the shoulder, you often hear about the “rotator cuff.” The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles [infraspinatus, supraspinatus, subscapularis, and teres minor] that help rotate the shoulder, which is critical for lifting your arm overhead. For your shoulder to feel good and for you to be able to get those plates out of the kitchen cabinet, all four muscles must be working correctly. A physical therapy exam will include a full assessment of your shoulder joint, neck, and back muscles—all of these play an integral role in your shoulder movement.

Commonly Treated Shoulder Conditions:

  • Rotator cuff tear/strain
  • Subacromial pain syndrome
  • Impingement syndrome
  • Tendinitis
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Labral tear
  • Shoulder Dislocation
  • Overuse injury

When to seek a physical therapist for shoulder pain:

  • You have difficulty reaching overhead.
  • You find it difficult to rest your hands on the wheel when driving
  • You have increased pain when typing, washing dishes, or even just walking down the street.
  • Your shoulder aches when you sit for long periods of time, or when you try to sleep at night
  • You experience pain sleeping on the affected side
  • You have noticed your neck is tighter or more painful than before your shoulder pain
  • Quick movements cause your shoulder pain to “bite”

My MRI shows I have a rotator cuff tear—can physical therapy help?

That MRI showing a rotator cuff tear is scary, but it doesn’t have to mean surgery. Recent research shows that these tears are often incidental findings, meaning that you may have already had a tear that you didn’t know about, but you functioned perfectly well! Unless you have a very large tear (usually due to an injury) and are completely unable to move your arm over your head, research shows that conservative management can often resolve your symptoms.

Worried about that MRI? Schedule your appointment today! Our skilled physical therapist will help you get rid of that nagging shoulder pain and back on track.

Heather is the best! I had issues with my hips and SI joints which were causing me terrible lower back pain and I was miserable! I lived for cortisone shots.

I was in so much pain the first time she saw me. I just wanted to be pain-free! I had gone to physical therapy in the past and it did nothing for me. The therapist would give me stim and heat and tell me to do some exercises and stretches. They would never put their hands on me to do any myofascial release.

With that said, I was hesitant to go again because I thought it would be a waste of my time. Boy, I am so glad I went!!! Heather has helped me tremendously!!! She is all hands on.

She assured me at my first visit that I would get better and to give it some time. She was right! Not only are my SI joints, lower back pain, and hips better, but there is a noticeable difference in my posture, my core is stronger, and I am much more balanced than I ever have been. I don’t have pain every day and am able to go weeks without therapy. I still have some work to do and will NEVER go to another therapist!

She is so knowledgeable and is continuously researching and learning new techniques. She has experience in myofascial release which is what I needed.

I haven't mentioned how friendly and accommodating she is when it comes to her patients. Her bedside manner is like no other! She treats her patients like family. I feel like I have known Heather forever and I’ve only known her for a short time.

At Ridgeview, if you are a germaphobe like me, you will be very comfortable. It’s very clean and the rooms are tidy and spic and span! If you are looking for the best, call Heather!!! I can guarantee you won’t be sorry!!!!
